happy thoughts...

Well, I finally finished it and it will be a part of the Sketchbook Project, a nationwide traveling exhibition showcasing the sketchbooks of thousands of artists and little ol' me.

My theme was "Happy Thougthts," so I decided to have a little fun, keep it simple, and write a little story about all of my happy thoughts.  My little twitter birdy came along for the ride and helped me illustrate some of my favorite happy thoughts.

Including cake...

and going to the beach...

presents...

I even worked a shoe into the mix...

It was a wonderful opportunity to fill a little book with the things I love most...funny little doodles of funny little things.  If you have a chance, please try to visit the Sketchbook Project Exhibit near you and support the many, many talented artists that participate yearly in this amazing event.

(You can take a peak at my funny little book, too!)

Happy Thoughts!  Take one and pass it on...

ciao bella...

I'm so very excited to see Bella Foster's first solo exhibit, Interiors, when I get back to the City.

Influenced by Henri Matisse (one of my favorites) and others, she uses her wonderful sense of imagination to depict interior spaces containing some of her most favorite objects...

I love the bright, bold colors and patterns in her paintings...
Can't wait to see them in person.

Also, check out this great article in Felt and Wire about the artist and her process...

the scariest thing in the whole wide world...

besides lipstick on teeth, bad toupees, ugly shoes and bad attitudes, would have to be a blank sketchbook.
(Incredible how I can link so many unrelated items at once, isn't it???)

anyways...

I finally received my little sketchbook for The Sketchbook Project...
Yay!

I have to fill this little guy by January 15th.  My theme is "Happy Thoughts."  I've been brainstorming and thinking night and day about what my sketches will look like, but now that I'm staring at the blank pages, I'm having a little stage fright...

I'm feeling very intimidated.

But as my mom likes to say when my sisters and I are whining:
"Get over it!"

Time to get to work...

I just had to...

to tell you one more time how beautiful, sweet, precious and perfect my little nephew is before I get back  to normal life...
Well, until I see him again, that is.

(I'm sure you have learned by now that this is not the blog for people who prefer serious conversation, have never felt the urge to scream and jump around at the mere sight of cute animals, and are completely annoyed by people who talk incessantly about babies and children.  Short of me getting a lobotomy, I highly doubt that will ever change.  There.  Consider yourself warned. )

He is the most pleasant newborn I've ever met, grinning and cooing in his sleep at less than a week old.

Before I said goodbye yesterday and headed back to Georgia, I made him a little sign for the front door...
Hopefully no one will be bold enough to ring the doorbell and disturb the little boy's peaceful slumbers.

It's shiny because I laminated it :)

This past week was one of the most magical weeks I have been a part of in a long time.
I told my brother-in-law the story of when my sister (I call her Jones) was born while I sat on the hospital bed with her, just moments after my little nephew was born...I was not quite three when Jones was born, but it is strange how I have never forgotten the night my grandmother took me to the hospital, and how we skated across the icy hospital parking lot in January.  How Nanny slipped and smashed her finger in the car door while helping me out of the car.
I crawled up on the bed with my mom to get a better look at my little sis, who would later refer to me as 'duh-duh', instead of sister.  She was so tiny.  What felt like a minute later, the nurse came in to take her back to the nursery.  I panicked and started crying and screaming, "don't take my sister away from me!  Don't take her away!!!"  I had only known her for a second, but I knew that I never wanted to be without her.
I couldn't help but think about that night while I sat and watched her hold her own little baby.  How grateful I am to have my whole family.  And how all of those feelings of love, pride and gratitude that started the night she was born have only grown.

I am so proud of you baby sister!  You continue to blow me away.  You are going to be a great mom!

in love...

with my new sketchbook.

My lovey dovey D gave it to me...how well does he know me???
I just adore the Dior and Chanel inspired sketches....

I have decided to tell a story on the pages inside the journal.  I thought it might be more interesting to link my little pictures to a theme rather than just have lots of random scribbles
(I have a library of sketchbooks that are filled with doodles, and scribbles and everything else in between...)
This book is too pretty not to have a purpose.

once upon a time...

here is the very beginning...
just a little pencil sketch. (that's my little twitter bird on the clock)
I haven't decided if I want to add color yet.
It might take something away if I make the sketches too fancy.

We'll see...more soon :)

a little morning art class...

I love Matisse.  He has always been a personal favorite...mostly because of his paintings but I do like his paper cuts (a fancy way to describe his special collaging technique) and drawings too.
I find his work to be so inspiring.

I learned earlier this week that Le Bateau, below, was hung upside down at the Museum of Modern Art for 46 days in 1961...

Le Bateau by Henri Matisse
paper cut and gouache

People seemed to be enjoying the tiny 5.4" x 4.1" paper cut  all the same until someone recognized the mistake and it was rehung right side up.

I guess even art experts have a little trouble deciphering the top from the bottom sometimes...

Learn more about Matisse and the collection at the MoMA.org...

I love...

to give handmade cards.

It couldn't be easier to do...
Make a simple card out of card stock and cut away a window with an exacto knife.
Add either a photograph or a drawing (I made a little watercolor for this card)...

Make sure that the window and the picture line up!

And add a little note...
(I like to write my notes on a separate note card)

That's it!

Now go send someone a little note and brighten their day!
